Size guide · coffee cup sizes in oz, ml and millimetres
Coffee Cup Sizes
Coffee cup sizes don’t vary much: a 4 oz espresso cup at the small end, a 24 oz iced cup at the big end, and a few steps in between. Here’s every one in oz and ml, measured off the cups we print, plus the café name for each and what usually goes in it.

We converted ml from US fluid ounces at 29.57 ml each (the figure from NIST) and rounded to the nearest ml. Inches are rounded to one decimal. Top diameter is the rim, and that’s the number lids are made to.
How many ounces is a cup of coffee?
A cup of coffee is 8 fl oz by US measuring standards, 5 fl oz on most coffee makers, and 8 to 16 oz at a café. Who’s asking matters. Bakers mean the measuring cup. Your brewer’s manual means 5 oz. A barista means whatever cup is in reach, and at most of the shops we print for that’s an 8, 12 or 16.

Coffee cup size names: short, tall, grande and venti
Short, tall, grande and venti are the coffee cup size names everybody knows, thanks to Starbucks. They’re menu words, not an industry standard. Each one just stands for a number of ounces.
| Name | Capacity | In ml |
|---|---|---|
| Short | 8 oz | 237 ml |
| Tall | 12 oz | 355 ml |
| Grande | 16 oz | 473 ml |
| Venti, hot | 20 oz | 591 ml |
| Venti, iced | 24 oz | 710 ml |
| Trenta, iced | 30 oz | 887 ml |
Small, medium and large mean nothing fixed, so order cups by the ounce. Trenta is Starbucks‘ 30 oz, iced only. Our biggest cup is 24 oz, so that’s the one row here you won’t find in our chart.
Which coffee cup size for which drink
Lattes tend to go out in 12s and 16s, cappuccinos in 8s. That’s habit, not a rule. Your recipes decide.
| Drink | Typical cup size |
|---|---|
| Espresso, macchiato | 4 oz |
| Cappuccino, flat white | 8 oz |
| Latte | 12 or 16 oz |
| Drip coffee, americano | 8, 12 or 16 oz |
| Tea, hot chocolate | 8, 12 or 16 oz |
| Iced coffee, iced latte, cold brew | 16, 20 or 24 oz cold cup |
Ice eats part of the cup, so an iced drink usually goes up a size from its hot version. Hot drinks go in single wall cups, or in double wall if you’d rather skip the sleeve. A double wall cup is our single wall cup with a second paper wall around it. Iced drinks go in our cold cups. They’re PE-coated inside and out, since a cup of ice sweats on the outside.
Lids fit by rim diameter
Lids go by rim size, not by ounces. Our 10 through 24 oz hot cups are all 90 mm across the top, and one hot lid fits every one of them. The 8 oz is 80 mm and the 4 oz is 62 mm, so they each get their own. If you sell 8, 12 and 16 oz hot, that’s two lids to keep on the shelf, not three. Cold cups are their own case: they take a cold cup lid made for them.
Check the top diameter before you order lids. Our hot cup lids page lists each lid with the cups it fits.
Print your own coffee cups
Any cup in this chart, we can print with your logo here in the USA. Single wall hot and cold cups are on our custom paper coffee cups page, and the insulated ones on double wall paper cups. Both pages price every size.

Which sizes do most shops order?
In double wall, 8, 12 and 16 oz. In single wall, 8, 10, 12 and 16 oz. Most of our custom orders are double wall.
How many ml is a 12 oz coffee cup?
About 355 ml. At 29.57 ml to the ounce, an 8 oz cup is about 237 ml, a 16 oz about 473 and a 20 oz about 591.
What size is a tall, grande or venti?
