Capacity in ml is converted from US fluid ounces (1 fl oz = 29.57 ml, as listed by NIST) and rounded to the nearest ml; inches are rounded to one decimal. Also, the top diameter is the rim, the measurement a lid fits.

Choosing between ice cream cup sizes

Scoops vary from shop to shop, so these are typical uses, not rules: a 4 oz cup for a kids’ portion or a tasting sample, 6 to 8 oz for a single or double scoop, and 12 to 16 oz for a sundae with toppings or a portion to share.

For that reason, check the chart against your own scoop: first weigh or measure one serving, then leave room above it for toppings.

How much ice cream is one serving?

One serving of ice cream is 2/3 cup, about 160 ml. FDA sets that figure for Nutrition Facts labels in 21 CFR 101.12, and cups and cones both go by it. A sundae counts as a full cup, about 240 ml.

The same FDA list puts frozen yogurt at 2/3 cup too. Gelato isn’t on it, and neither one has a federal recipe. We’ve laid out how gelato, custard and froyo differ from ice cream, from fat to serving temperature.

A scoop depends on the disher, and dishers are numbered. The USDA Food Buying Guide gives each one: No. 6 is 2/3 cup, No. 8 is 1/2 cup, No. 12 is 1/3 cup, No. 16 is 1/4 cup. Level, that’s about 5.3, 4, 2.7 and 2 fl oz. Round the top off and you get more.

The oz on our cups is the recommended fill, not the brim. Our 12 oz cup holds close to 14 oz filled to the rim. One 2/3 cup serving comes to about 90% of a 6 oz cup’s rated fill and 68% of an 8 oz cup’s. It’s more than the 118 ml a 4 oz cup is rated for, which is why we list the 4 oz as a kids’ cup or a sample.

Lids for different ice cream cup sizes

An ice cream cup lid fits by the cup’s top diameter, just like any cup lid. A dome lid leaves room for toppings above the rim, whereas a flat lid suits a cup filled level.

Our lids page lists the ice cream cup lids and the cup sizes each one fits.

Questions we get

What ice cream cup sizes do you make?

4, 6, 8, 12 and 16 oz. The chart above gives each size in ml with its diameters, height and typical use.

What size ice cream cup do I need for one scoop?

A 6 or 8 oz cup. One serving is 2/3 cup, about 160 ml, which is one level scoop from a No. 6 disher. It fills about 90% of a 6 oz cup’s rated fill and 68% of an 8 oz cup’s, and either takes a single or double scoop. A 4 oz cup suits a kids’ portion or a sample. Scoops vary, so check against your own.

How many ml is a 16 oz ice cream cup?

About 473 ml. One US fluid ounce is 29.57 ml, so a 4 oz cup holds about 118 ml, an 8 oz cup about 237 ml and a 12 oz cup about 355 ml.

Which lid fits my ice cream cup?

A lid fits by the cup’s top diameter, the first measurement in the chart. Our lids page lists each ice cream cup lid and the sizes it fits.
